Tin Bird Choir - Barn Rock

Postby tntracy on Fri Oct 16, 2009 12:20 pm

In New York City, after Lu's last show Monday night Oct. 5th at the Fillmore East Irving Plaza, I had the pleasure of meeting a friend of Butch's and fellow percussionist Ellen Houle. Among other musical endeavors, she plays drums, etc. for a band out of Philadelphia (Coventryville, PA, to be more exact) called Tin Bird Choir, headed up by the husband & wife team of Eric and Heather Hurlock. She was sweet enough to give me a copy of the band's debut CD, Barn Rock, that was just officially released on October 9th (according to their MySpace page).

I finally got around to listening to the CD today, and I must say I am completely enthralled with this band. Eric & Heather share vocal duties, singing duet on some songs, or solo on others. Both have great voices, but I am totally blown away by Heather's vocals! She has a great dusky, smoky vocal style that, at the same time is highly compelling and captivating. The band sounds great, too, and the all-original songwriting is wonderful (all the songs on the CD were written by Eric, with the exception of "Canopy", which was written by Heather).

From a quote on their MySpace page - "Tin Bird Choir. It's slightly country, slightly rock and definitely good, wholesome music that you can't help but enjoy listening to. Check them out, let them grow on you, and join one of the coolest families around." - Laurie Perini, The Phoenix

Check them out!

As a postscript for those who are interested, I discovered that Barn Rock will not be available for sale until November 3rd (at the earliest) at http://www.cdbaby.com. Meanwhile, a digital download of the album can be purchased here for $9.99. Also, you can preview all the songs on the album there.

I can happily and enthusiastically vouch for Tin Bird Choir -and "Barn Rock." These folks are the Real Deal. The writing is smart, real and from the heart. What more do you want? Charm? In spades. The same can be said of the band itself. (All of which Lucinda fans have come to expect and appreciate.) Get a copy and spread the word.

Drummer Ellen Houle is the real deal too. She's a great young drummer and a truly soulful "kid." In the interest of full disclosure -I have to mention that I have the pleasure of playing with her in my my own band: Jack Murray & the Midnight Creeps -one of several bands in this magical corner of Berks County, PA that include Frog Holler, The Youngers and (in neighboring Lehigh County) The Electric Farm, Tavern Tan and others.

It's probably no coincidence that two of the coolest venues on the planet are in the "neighborhood" -Bethlehem's legendary "Godfrey Daniels" and the extraordinary, middle-of-nowhere venue "Landhaven" in Huffs Church. It's a genuine pleasure to be part of such a special musical neighborhood -where success by others is Encouraged and Applauded.

I predict good things for all of us. But right now it's time for Tin Bird Choir to shine! And they do! Get the CD and tell your friends! While you're at it, check their website and go see them Live.
